Game-Changing Moments
The Detroit Tigers appeared to tie the score in the sixth inning against the Chicago White Sox. Sean Burke’s pitch eluded catcher Kyle Teel on a swinging strike, allowing Riley Greene to dash home safely. However, the White Sox sensed something was amiss and requested a review.
“Just kind of collectively looked like a funky play where we weren’t quite sure, maybe it’s even a foul ball,” said Sox manager Will Venable. “Just let major-league replay/video coordinator Bryan Johnson do his thing on the replay.”
The video review confirmed that the pitch struck batter Brett Callahan, rendering the play invalid. Consequently, Greene returned to third base while the bases stayed loaded. Burke then struck out Callahan, marking a pivotal moment in the game.
Burke Delivers Key Performance
Burke played a crucial role in the White Sox’s 3-1 victory over the Tigers in front of 30,631 fans at Rate Field. He allowed one run on five hits over six innings, striking out five and walking three in 97 pitches. Burke’s performance marked the first quality start by a Sox pitcher since his previous outing against the New York Mets.
“One of those days where you really need Burke to step up and have a good outing,” Venable praised. “I thought he did a great job.”
Standout Contributions and Team Goals
The Sox maintained their two-game lead over the Houston Astros for the final American League wild-card spot, with seven games remaining. They trail the Cleveland Guardians by one game for first place in the AL Central.
Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas made significant contributions both offensively and defensively. He went 1-for-2 with two walks, a solo home run, and two runs. Vargas became the first player in Sox history to record at least 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases, and 100 runs in a single season.
“It’s what he’s done all year,” Venable stated. “Certainly a great day to point to on his growth and some of the things he’s been able to achieve individually.”
Solid Pitching Seals the Win
White Sox pitchers Noah Schultz and Grant Taylor preserved the lead. Schultz delivered 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
“Doing whatever to help get wins,” Schultz commented. “That’s the bottom line, try to win games.”
Taylor closed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, earning his 10th save. The White Sox rebounded from their six-run lead loss in Friday’s game.
Vargas reflected on the team’s resilience:
“This is what this team is about,” Vargas declared. “We never give up. We always come back and battle the next day and play all nine innings. That’s what we have been doing the whole year, just show up that day.”
