The 2021 College Podcast Challenge was a turning point for several participants. Mar Hernandez, who won the challenge, received their first job offer in radio at KNKX, an NPR member station in Seattle. This opportunity paved the way for a career in journalism, leading to reporting opportunities from California to New York City.
Reconnecting with Family
Miriam Colvin, a freshman at Penn State University in 2021, also emerged as a winner. Her podcast focused on a family story involving a boxing match between her grandfather’s friend and Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay. Winning inspired her to pursue stand-up comedy and playwriting.
Colvin appreciates the stories from her grandparents, finding inspiration and a connection to her past. As she matures, these tales hold greater significance, revealing shared experiences and challenges across generations.
For Bunmi Omisore, gaining an understanding of her heritage was crucial. Her podcast, which earned an honorable mention, explored her journey in learning her parents’ native language, Yoruba. Determined to bridge the language barrier, she committed to learning Yoruba, transforming her ability to connect with her family’s culture.
Now capable of understanding her parents in Yoruba, Omisore experiences a deeper connection with her heritage. She reflects on her grandmother’s videos, now comprehending the humor and personality she once missed due to the language gap.
A Step Closer to a Dream Career
Bennett Cook, an enthusiast of public transit, entered the challenge from Buffalo State University. His podcast centered on the unique sounds produced by subway trains. The experience solidified his desire to work in transit, ultimately securing employment with the Chicago Transit Authority.
Cook envisions a future involving train operation and transit system expansion in Chicago. He sees these possibilities as extensions of his passion developed through the podcast challenge.
Jo Strogatz, another notable participant, joined the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Maine when she won in 2024. Her podcast included original music and an interview with a friend who had never experienced a romantic relationship. Now working at Radiolab, she attributes her career achievement to the confidence and exposure gained from the contest.
Strogatz describes her role as a remarkable opportunity to intertwine science, storytelling, and learning from industry professionals.
These stories highlight how the College Podcast Challenge has been a catalyst for personal and professional growth among participants, transforming aspirations into reality.
