Rose Friedman was a remarkable journalist at NPR who left an indelible mark on arts and cultural coverage. Her journey with NPR began in her early 20s as an editorial assistant. Over time, she assumed the roles of editor and reporter, contributing significantly to initiatives like the Books We Love reading guide.
Friedman passed away at the age of 38 from cancer at her home in New York City. She was instrumental in creating the Books We Love guide, showcasing her deep connection to the publishing world. Her role extended beyond editing book reviews; she also authored appreciations for distinguished writers like Herman Wouk.
Novelist Meg Wolitzer, who collaborated with Friedman on several NPR reviews, described her as a “gifted, delightful, brilliant, deeply kind person” and a true enthusiast. Friedman possessed a classic journalist’s curiosity combined with skepticism, pushing back on stories lacking substance to demand higher standards of reporting.
Friedman valued truth and thorough reporting over trendy topics, as highlighted by Theo Balcomb, former NPR editor.
In the pivotal role of lead reporter for NPR on Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault trial, Friedman showcased her thorough reporting skills. Her dedication to labor rights emerged during her labor history studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., and through her collaboration in increasing NPR’s paid parental leave.
With a passion for both family and travel, Friedman was cherished by her partner, Andrew Anastasi, and their two children. Her adventurous spirit extended to culinary experiences, such as exploring food in Washington, D.C., and Italy.
Friend and colleague Natalie Winston reminisced about her spring visit with Friedman, who continued to seek new experiences even after surgery. Friedman’s life remains a testament to her wisdom, humor, and unyielding voice.
Rose Friedman is survived by her partner, children, parents Carolyn and Jerry Friedman, sisters Sophie and Nina, and many friends and colleagues. Her invaluable contributions and presence will be deeply missed.
