Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, remains unfazed by a new Republican resolution that seeks to prohibit individuals born outside the United States from serving in Congress. When asked about this proposed legislation, Omar simply responded, “Good luck to her.” The proposal, led by Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, aims to amend the Constitution by requiring that members of Congress, federal judges, and Senate-confirmed officers be natural-born citizens of the United States.
Mace introduced the idea while addressing reporters after a briefing on U.S. actions in Iran. She specifically named Omar, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal, pointing out their foreign-born origins. Mace emphasized her belief that loyalties of those in power should be exclusively to America. Despite this, Omar expressed little concern about the proposal gaining traction.
Currently, 26 members of Congress were not born in the United States. Among them, there are 19 Democrats and seven Republicans. Changing the U.S. Constitution is a challenging process. It demands two-thirds approval in both the House and Senate and must then be ratified by three-fourths of the U.S. states. As of now, the amendment has not received significant backing within the Republican leadership.
In addition to Mace’s proposal, Omar commented on another piece of legislation, the “Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act,” introduced by Rep. Randy Fine of Florida. This bill would bar anyone with dual citizenship from serving in Congress unless they renounce their foreign citizenship. Omar dismissed the bill, showing uncertainty about its introduction.
Fine argues that serving in Congress requires undivided allegiance to the United States. However, his bill has yet to gain momentum since its introduction to the House Committee on the Judiciary.
