On Sunday, U.K. police in Gloucestershire declared a “major incident” near RAF Fairford, a British airbase used by the U.S. military for operations against Iran. Authorities began evacuating properties in Whelford, located approximately two miles from the airbase. Residents were instructed to gather at a local leisure center.
Reports indicate several men were arrested under suspicion of being involved in offenses related to explosives. Despite the arrests, police stated the situation was “contained.” British Army bomb disposal experts are currently inspecting a series of vehicles, as confirmed by Gloucestershire officials.
In early March, the U.K. approved the use of RAF Fairford by the U.S. for defensive strikes on Iran. During that time, local residents reported heavy bombers taking off from the base, causing their homes to shake.
RAF Fairford serves as a launching point for multiple types of U.S. bombers, including B-1s and B-52s. In June, Tehran labeled U.K. bases facilitating attacks on Iran as “legitimate targets,” accusing London of being an “accomplice” in U.S. military actions. A government spokesperson responded, affirming the U.K.’s readiness to defend itself round-the-clock.
