U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker stated on Saturday that Ukrainian attacks inside Russia are influencing negotiations, potentially bringing Moscow and Kyiv closer to discussions. The comment follows ongoing efforts by President Donald Trump to press Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to consider negotiating an end to the war.
Whitaker highlighted during ‘The Big Weekend Show’ that both adversaries must cooperate to end the conflict. Ukraine’s aggressive actions against Russia serve to potentially bridge the gap between the two sides. However, Whitaker cautioned that there remains a significant divide between Moscow and Kyiv on pivotal issues, indicating that harmony won’t be achieved through hostile measures.
‘This conflict is not going to be resolved on the battlefield. It can only be concluded through diplomacy and negotiation,’ Whitaker emphasized.
He further explained that President Trump and his team are actively seeking common ground between Russia and Ukraine to facilitate discussions. If Putin refuses compromise, achieving a deal will be challenging. However, Trump’s business acumen may prove valuable in forging an agreement.
Trump reported that 25,000 lives were lost in the war last month, while 32,000 perished the previous month, primarily soldiers. He expressed regret over the continued casualties, including civilians.
According to the Center for Strategic & International Studies, Russia has incurred up to 450,000 soldier casualties since its invasion in 2022.
