Donald Johnson, an 81-year-old delivery driver in Texas, gained attention following an encounter that revealed the motivations behind his continued work. Reports indicate Johnson, who delivers lost luggage as an independent contractor, has been supporting his wife Josephine, who is undergoing cancer treatment.
Struggle Captured on Camera
While delivering a heavy bag to a home in The Colony, Erin Howell noticed him grappling with a steep set of stairs. Her doorbell camera captured the moment. Howell stepped in to help, learning that Johnson had been working to meet medical expenses.
“It’s the only job that will hire me,” Johnson stated, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Community Responds With Support
Moved by Johnson’s situation, Howell shared the story online, sparking a wave of donations and support. Thousands responded, and Howell initiated a fundraiser to alleviate the Johnsons’ medical costs and enable Donald to focus on caring for his wife.
Josephine Johnson expressed gratitude for the encouragement received from strangers, noting, “I can face it. I think that’s the big difference.” Despite her challenging battle with cancer, the couple was uplifted by the community’s prayers and messages.
Fundraiser Removed Due to Technicality
The situation took a turn when the fundraiser, having reached over $700,000, was removed from GoFundMe. A technicality led to donations being refunded. In a TikTok update, the Johnsons’ daughter Amy explained the circumstances, emphasizing the intended use of funds for medical expenses and alleviating Donald’s work burden.
GoFundMe shared that their trust and safety team found violations of their terms of service, though specifics were not disclosed. Their policies emphasize the necessity for authenticity and transparency.
