USC Linebacker Suspended for Hit on Oregon QB
During the game against USC on Saturday at the Coliseum, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore was carted off after a late hit. The incident involved USC linebacker Desman Stephens II, who hit Moore during a run play.
Stephens charged at Moore, who slid late, and Stephens’ shoulder connected with Moore’s head. His celebration of the hit provoked outrage among Oregon players and fans. NBC cameras captured him smiling as Moore received medical attention before being taken to the hospital.
The hit led to Stephens’ ejection for targeting. However, NCAA rules allowed him to stay on the sideline and support his team during the second half.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning described the hit as “disgusting.” Both USC coach Lincoln Riley and Lanning stated they did not see Stephens’ reaction immediately after the play.
In response, USC suspended Stephens for the next game against Washington. Riley emphasized the unacceptability of Stephens’ actions, noting these behaviors don’t reflect USC Football’s values. He stated that Stephens acknowledges his error and is prepared to face the consequences.
Desman’s actions are unacceptable and not reflective of USC. He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences, and will learn from this.
USC’s apology from Stephens stressed his regret, admitting his reaction was inappropriate. He expressed responsibility, acknowledging it was not how he wished to be perceived.
Seeing a player injured like that is serious. My reaction was inappropriate and inexcusable. I take full responsibility, and I am deeply sorry to Dante and his family.
Currently, there is no official update on Moore’s condition from Oregon. However, reports indicate he suffered a concussion. He was cleared to fly back with the team to Eugene.
