Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell was listed as inactive for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints after announcing the death of his father earlier in the week. O’Connell shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, accompanied by a photo with his parents, before deactivating his social media.
‘It is with immense sadness that I share the passing of my Dad, Jim,’ he wrote on Friday. ‘My Dad was a gift to me and to so many others. All who were fortunate enough to know him can testify to the great man he was. He impacted countless lives, and those who knew him were better for it.’
O’Connell conveyed his family’s heartache and reliance on their faith for comfort. He expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they received during this challenging time. He requested continued support as they mourn and honor his father’s impactful life. He mentioned drawing strength from Scripture, trusting his father is at peace.
O’Connell referenced the Heidelberg Catechism through this difficult period. He shared a passage reflecting his belief in belonging to Jesus Christ both in life and death.
‘Rest in peace, Dad. We love you and will miss you more than words can say.’
Since being drafted in the fourth round by the Raiders in 2023, O’Connell has played in 21 games, amassing 3,932 yards and 20 touchdowns. This season he started in the QB3 position after the team signed Kirk Cousins and drafted Fernando Mendoza first overall. His absence follows his emotional announcement and the recent loss in his family.
