Dylan Stewart, an edge rusher for the South Carolina Gamecocks, has been projected as a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Recent events, however, have cast uncertainty over his future.
An incident during South Carolina’s game against Alabama has raised concerns. Stewart was ejected from the game after striking the helmet of Alabama’s tight end Josh Ford. Following this, he engaged in a verbal altercation with coaches on the sideline.
On Sunday, Head Coach Shane Beamer announced Stewart’s indefinite suspension. During a press conference, Beamer emphasized the importance of accountability and adherence to team standards. Stewart will not participate in the upcoming game against Kentucky.
“I’ll make the decision on what his future looks like beyond this week here in the next day or so,” said Beamer, according to 247 Sports. “The punch is unacceptable. It’s beyond the punch.”
Stewart’s track record on the field is notable. As a freshman, he made headlines with 6.5 sacks and 23 tackles in the 2024 season. In 2025, he registered 4.5 sacks and 33 tackles. His performance earned him second-team All-SEC honors and an honorable mention All-American designation.
Despite his past achievements, Stewart’s return to play remains uncertain. His suspension comes as the Gamecocks stand at a 2-2 record after the loss to Alabama. South Carolina will face Kentucky next. The team’s strategy and morale could be impacted without Stewart’s presence.
The situation highlights the challenges athletes face in maintaining professional conduct alongside athletic prowess. Stewart’s actions have sparked a conversation about accountability within sports teams and the implications for individual careers.
As the Gamecocks prepare for their next game, all eyes are on Coach Beamer’s upcoming decision regarding Stewart’s status with the team.
