In Spokane, Washington, school routines have become a source of comfort for students and families affected by recent wildfires. These devastating fires turned sections of the city to ash, leaving many without their homes and belongings.
High school sports, including football games, have provided a sense of normalcy for those impacted. At Shadle Park High School, cheerleaders performed on the sidelines as players competed in a recent game. Despite challenges, these events bring relief and joy to a community in recovery.
One of the residents, 17-year-old Dailon Wells-Dutton, begins each day in an unfamiliar setting. He now lives in an apartment, as his previous home was destroyed by the fire. His mother has done her best to recreate some semblance of his past life by replacing the philosophy books and family pictures he lost. However, his new environment still feels foreign, with an empty closet and a new teddy bear replacing the cherished childhood one.
These adjustments underscore the community’s struggle to adapt and recover. Yet, the persistence of certain routines, like school and sports, offers hope and a sense of continuity for those determined to rebuild their lives.
