At the United Nations General Assembly, Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed confidence regarding Finland’s preparedness in the face of potential threats from Russia. This contrasts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s warnings about the possibility of Russian aggression extending beyond Ukraine.
President Stubb acknowledged the efforts of former President Donald Trump in pursuing peace negotiations, crediting figures like Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for their roles in these processes.
During the diplomatic week focused on Ukraine and the Middle East, Trump met with Zelenskyy in New York, reaffirming the priority of peace for Ukraine and recognizing the strategic talks involving Moscow.
“Respond. Always respond. It’s not about the war. If you don’t respond, Russians, they will go further,” Zelenskyy stated regarding the threat of Russian incursions.
Despite Zelenskyy’s concerns, Stubb maintained a calmer outlook, explaining that Finland has substantial defensive capabilities, including mandatory military service and a robust reserve. Finland’s recent acquisition of 64 F-35A fighter jets further bolsters its preparedness against regional threats.
Stubb noted Finland’s extensive civil defense infrastructure, which includes shelters capable of accommodating millions. This defensive posture, combined with Finland’s NATO membership, serves as a formidable deterrent.
While acknowledging the ongoing “hybrid war” involving cyberattacks and sabotage, Stubb reiterated Finland’s strategy: remain calm and continue to prepare thoroughly.
Stubb also underscored the interconnectedness of global conflicts, highlighting intelligence and weapon exchanges between Russia and Iran in various regional disputes.
On nuclear threats, Stubb supported Trump’s call for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities and stressed the importance of addressing multiple, simultaneous conflicts.
Amid widespread diplomatic challenges, Stubb emphasized the need for continuous effort by global leaders to resolve the proliferating crises.
