Matthew Stafford has significantly built on his NFL legacy in recent seasons, securing his first MVP award for the 2025 campaign. On a remarkable Sunday night, Stafford achieved a milestone unmatched in the league’s history during the Los Angeles Rams’ game against the Denver Broncos in Week 3.
According to ESPN Insights, Stafford is the first player to throw for 20,000 yards with multiple teams. His career stats boast 45,109 passing yards with the Detroit Lions and 20,000 yards with the Los Angeles Rams.
While the game brought a record-breaking moment, Stafford, 38, experienced a different form of history when he threw a pick-six in the fourth quarter. This marked his 33rd career pick-six, setting a new league record, surpassing Brett Favre’s previous record of 32.
Rams head coach Sean McVay shared his belief in Stafford’s growth before the season. He commented to Albert Breer that Stafford is improving with age. Stafford acknowledged his reliance on skilled teammates due to his lack of mobility compared to quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. “I felt like for me to play really well, everybody around me has to play really well,” Stafford said. “I’m really blessed to have good players and a head coach that puts us all in a really good position to succeed. Playing with confidence and trust adds to the danger for opponents.”
Stafford aims to win his second Super Bowl with the Rams this season. Although surpassing his totals with the Lions may be unlikely before retirement, future awards could still be within reach.
