Robert Davi’s Departure from California: A Reflection on Crime and Politics
Robert Davi, a veteran actor known for tough roles in The Goonies, Die Hard, and as a Bond villain in License to Kill, has often criticized California’s political climate and Hollywood’s cultural direction. Born in Queens, New York, Davi considered Los Angeles his home since 1977, after moving west as his career gained traction.
Despite his enduring love for the Californian lifestyle, Davi cites crime and homelessness as primary reasons for his departure to Florida. He expressed concerns over political issues he believes are worsening, including a Hollywood blacklist related to his support for President Donald Trump. As of January, it will be four years since he and his family moved.
“The overwhelming influx of homelessness in all communities, the political corruption and the waste of money by the local education agencies in Los Angeles that’s not used for students but for administration costs,” Davi said. He also pointed to mismanagement of LA fires.
Robert Davi is also known for his criticism of Los Angeles’ increasing crime rate, mentioning how venues like CVS now require additional security measures due to rampant incidences of theft. He reminisced about simpler times, hoping for improvement in the state.
The tipping point for Davi came with the home invasion and killing of Jacqueline Avant in Beverly Hills. The crime made him question the safety of his community.
Davi’s close association with Hollywood’s music community is highlighted by his performance of Frank Sinatra’s music and connections with figures such as Quincy Jones. He emphasized concerns over the political shift in Hollywood, questioning how it became so left-wing.
“Why did I leave California? It was knowing this and watching this happen,” Davi said. He lamented the political climate and increasing crime rate.
When speaking about past political climates in Hollywood, Davi recalled how conservatives and liberals could speak openly. However, he sees current liberalism as having evolved into something more aggressive.
Efforts were made to reach California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office for comment but no response was provided.
Davi’s departure symbolized his disillusionment with the changes in California and a growing sense of exclusion due to his political views.
