President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of Canada on Monday, labeling the country as “one of the worst in the entire world” amid growing trade tensions. Recently, Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. In retaliation, Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed a “dollar for dollar” response.
During an Oval Office discussion with reporters, Trump accused Canada of unfair treatment towards the United States. He pointed to high tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods and stated Canadian leaders believe they have rights. “They want a deal,” Trump said. “They call us constantly. Yet, they have treated the U.S. very unfairly. Canada has been one of the most difficult countries to deal with. They impose 400% tariffs or more on our farmers. They take advantage and feel entitled.”
Trump added that Canada heavily depends on the U.S. economy, claiming Americans offer support in various forms, including military collaboration and icebreakers. He emphasized the U.S. does not require Canadian resources, asserting, “There’s nothing they have that we need.” Despite the strained relations, Canada remains the U.S.’s second-largest trading partner, following Mexico.
Carney has demonstrated efforts to strengthen Canada’s economic ties beyond the United States. He has supported Canada becoming the European Union’s first associate member to bolster ties with Europe. Additionally, Carney has pursued a trade agreement with India and improved relations with China by reducing tariffs on Canadian canola and permitting a select number of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada’s market.
Todd Belt, a political management professor at George Washington University, mentioned Trump’s miscalculation of Carney’s determination. “Donald Trump underestimated Carney,” Belt stated. “He expected to exert control over him, but it didn’t occur.” Belt also highlighted Trump’s failure to foresee Canada’s strategic retaliation, aimed at Senate toss-up seats like Michigan, Ohio, and Alaska.
