A routine traffic stop in Kentucky ended in tragedy as Trooper Hayden Phillips, 30, was shot and killed on Interstate 65 in Warren County. This event triggered a statewide manhunt resulting in the suspect’s arrest. Phillips is survived by his wife and three young sons.
At a news conference, U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner expressed the profound loss, stating, “We have a wife that expected her husband to come home. We have three little boys who don’t have a dad.” Phillips had served in the Kentucky State Police for three years, working at Post 3 in Bowling Green. He was a member of Cadet Class 103 and known as Unit 369 among his peers.
“Because he served our community, because he wanted to keep us safe, he gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Bumgarner said.
Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. vowed to seek justice for Phillips, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to this goal. He remarked, “Let me repeat that, we will seek justice for Hayden.”
The Kentucky State Police initially reported a trooper-involved shooting along northbound I-65. A lookout was issued for a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama tag, seen at the scene. A Blue Alert identified Emonnie Branch as the suspect. Eventually, Louisville Metro Police apprehended Branch, canceling the alert. Branch now faces charges of murdering a first responder.
Bumgarner, condemning the suspect’s “cowardly actions,” confirmed that Branch would return to Warren County to face state murder charges. He stressed the Justice Department’s support for Kentucky prosecutors and investigators, pledging to provide all necessary tools.
Bumgarner made a heartfelt promise to Phillips’ family, assuring them of unwavering support from the state police. “You will not walk this path alone,” he stated.
Governor Andy Beshear honored Phillips for his dedication to Kentucky’s safety, describing him as a “devoted husband and loving father.” Calls for community support for Phillips’ family resounded from various officials, including Representatives Brett Guthrie, James Comer, and Morgan McGarvey.
Country singer Lee Greenwood also expressed condolences, emphasizing his support for law enforcement members.
