Zoe Saldaña has expressed her boundaries regarding participation in Taylor Sheridan’s expanding television empire. As the lead actress in Sheridan’s CIA drama Lioness, her role as Joe McNamara has been demanding. Saldaña conveyed that this role has pushed her to her limits, limiting her involvement in Sheridan’s TV universe. “I think that Joe McNamara and Lioness is all that I can handle at this time,” Saldaña remarked in an interview with People.
On Set Workload
Being the leading figure in Lioness entails significant efforts on Saldaña’s part. “I’m number one on the call sheet. I am first one in, last one out,” she stated. Preparation for the role begins months before filming, presenting an extensive workload. Saldaña expressed her reluctance to take on more projects within Sheridan’s world, citing the considerable demands already placed on her.
Trust and Reliability
Despite the heavy workload, Saldaña appreciates the trust Sheridan has in her abilities. “The good takeaway that I’m grateful for is that he knows that I’m reliable, just like Joe is,” she shared. Sheridan values her honesty, toughness, and outspoken nature. Although she had doubts about handling the demanding role ahead of Season 3, she managed to rise to the challenge.
Season Three Reflections
Saldaña admitted to questioning her capability to perform under such demanding circumstances before the premiere of Season 3 on August 2. “I didn’t even know if I was gonna be able to pull it off,” she confessed to Entertainment Weekly. However, her portrayal of a fiercely capable CIA operative eventually proved fulfilling and enriched by Sheridan’s writing.
Season three saw Joe’s intense CIA career influence her personal life heavily. The narrative challenged her family dynamics and placed Joe herself in danger, presenting a multi-layered and challenging performance for Saldaña.
Character-Driven Role
Saldaña is grateful for the manner in which Sheridan crafted Joe McNamara, focusing on her abilities rather than her gender. “I feel like you give yourself the opportunity of a wider range of actors that can come in and sort of vie for that part,” she elaborated, appreciating the potential breadth in storytelling. Reflecting on men who successfully write female characters, she stated, “I’m incredibly honored that he wrote Joe as a woman.”
The third season concluded on September 20, and fans await confirmation regarding a Season four from Paramount+. Saldaña’s comments resonate in the context of a deeply demanding, yet rewarding role.
