Twelve years after dozens of Mexican students disappeared, authorities have identified 17 new suspects. These students vanished while traveling from Guerrero to a protest in Mexico City. The incident occurred on September 26, 2014, after police stopped them in Iguala. It is alleged the students were handed over to a local cartel by the police.
The case has led to numerous arrests, including a leader from the Guerreros Unidos cartel in 2024. Despite these developments, no convictions have been secured. Mexico faces scrutiny and ongoing trauma from this unresolved case.
A special prosecutor unveiled that phone call analysis from the night of the disappearance was pivotal in identifying the new suspects. The calls reveal connections between officials, police, organized crime affiliates, and private individuals. Arrests stemmed from communications hinting at involvement in the crime.
During investigations, authorities discovered evidence such as an illegally obtained weapon and bone fragments in a funeral home. Cellphones of two students were reportedly used days after the incident.
A minor involved in the events was apprehended in April. This individual is associated with the Guerreros Unidos cartel. To date, 168 people face prosecution regarding the disappearance, with 130 in pretrial detention.
Marches continue annually to demand justice for the 43 Ayotzinapa students. Their portraits were displayed during the ninth-anniversary march in Mexico City on September 26, 2023.
Investigations into deleted security footage and concealed videos have led to recent arrests. These efforts target those protecting the perpetrators.
Authorities face challenges identifying burned bone fragments of the missing students. Searches continue in rural areas tied to cartel activity. Mexico struggles with cartel violence, impacting over half a million people, according to government estimates.
