New York Magazine has introduced its first men’s style issue, featuring transgender actor Elliot Page. The magazine has a history of covering men’s fashion, noting past stories like the 1971 cover exploring if men would embrace high heels and a 1996 profile on male supermodels.
Throughout the years, the magazine has frequently revisited men’s style. In 2006, part of the women’s fashion issue focused on men’s fashion, highlighting figures like designer Thom Browne and metrosexuals of that era. Now, the magazine sees this as a moment to spotlight key figures in men’s style, from influential business players to longstanding models.
The current issue includes multiple covers, one featuring Elliot Page linked to an article titled “The Boys in the Baths.” This piece details social experiences at a historic bathhouse in New York. Page shared his thoughts on comfort and self-expression, describing his own experiences and penchant for singing in the shower.
Criticism arose from political commentator Link Lauren, who questioned the choice to feature Page in a male-oriented issue. Lauren argued that masculinity is underrepresented, criticizing the cover as a strategy to draw attention rather than a genuine focus on men’s fashion.
Tim Graham, from media watchdog NewsBusters, also criticized the magazine, questioning its understanding of gender representation. He compared the magazine’s decision to past choices by other publications that featured transgender individuals.
Alexander Hall, an associate editor for Fox News Digital, reported on this story. For further insights into media and culture, more coverage is available.
