President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to tackle the mosquito population in Washington, D.C. The order is a response to a dengue fever outbreak currently affecting Florida. It directs officials, including Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, to design and implement a 60-day plan to reduce specific invasive mosquito species by 90%.
In addition to mosquitoes, the order also targets ticks. It aims to cut the tick population in the D.C. area by 50% over two years. The approach includes using commonsense and technical methods to address breeding grounds on federally controlled lands. Emphasis will be placed on leveraging commercial capabilities and cooperative agreements.
Technological and Non-Chemical Approaches
The executive order tasks several federal agencies with forming guidelines for new mosquito and tick control technologies. It underscores the importance of non-chemical solutions that are claimed to be safe and effective. The invasive mosquito species are becoming more prevalent across certain regions in the United States, according to the order.
Research into mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses will be expanded. This involves new prize competitions, federal research initiatives, and public-private partnerships aimed at advancing innovative solutions. The administration has called on health and science agencies to ramp up efforts against Lyme disease and other related illnesses by exploring cutting-edge technologies.
Labeling options for products with substantial alpha-galactose content will also be examined, addressing concerns about alpha-gal syndrome. This red-meat allergy, linked to tick bites, has become increasingly worrisome.
Americans should be able to enjoy the beauty and health of Our Nation’s Capital without the threat of widespread invasive ticks and mosquito populations. President Trump is Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Again.
Dengue Fever Outbreak in Florida
While action is being taken in D.C., Florida faces a unique challenge with dengue fever spreading rapidly across the state. Three counties have declared emergencies due to the rise in cases. The Florida Department of Health has confirmed 190 locally acquired cases across six counties, with Hillsborough County having 170 of these cases. Officials link this outbreak to recent heavy rainfall.
Dengue fever is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti. It poses a global health threat, affecting tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. While most U.S. cases arise in travelers, local transmission can occur, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
