House Members’ Reimbursement Program Raises Concerns
Since 2009, the base salary for members of the House of Representatives has remained unchanged. Despite this, expenses related to representing Americans continue to rise.
To address these costs, the House established a reimbursement program to help representatives manage expenses. However, the program allows reimbursements without requiring receipts, leading to growing concerns over transparency.
In 2025, Abraham Hamadeh, a GOP congressman from Arizona, ranked second on the list of largest reimbursements under this program. This situation highlights the potential for unchecked expense claims, which might be viewed as politically unsound by voters.
The lack of receipt requirements in the reimbursement program has led to rapid increases in reported expenses, sparking debates about fiscal responsibility and accountability within Congress.
