Doctors Advocate Against FDA Nominee
Doctors Oppose FDA Nominee Heidi Overton
A large number of medical professionals are opposing the nomination of Heidi Overton for the role of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) leader. Over 2,500 doctors from every state, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico have signed a letter organized by the Committee to Protect Health Care. This letter, initially shared with The Hill, challenges Overton’s suitability for the role due to perceived extreme and anti-scientific views.
“Dr. Overton’s dangerous record on vaccines and extremist anti-abortion advocacy are deeply troubling, and render her unfit to lead such a critical public health institution,”
The letter emphasizes that the FDA needs a commissioner who prioritizes evidence and patient safety over ideology and political influences. Overton’s views on abortion and her support for controversial vaccine measures are cited as disqualifying factors.
Last week, Overton appeared at her confirmation hearing. She remained vague in her responses to Senate inquiries regarding her stance on crucial issues affecting the FDA’s operations, like drug regulation and vaccine safety. During this process, Senator Bill Cassidy, also a physician, pressed her on Trump’s executive order about altering the MMR vaccine. However, she refrained from directly addressing Trump’s position.
