In a recent interview, Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump, expressed concerns that the ongoing conflict with Iran might jeopardize the Republican Party in the upcoming midterms. She shared these thoughts while speaking to British journalist Harry Cole.
Impact of the Iran Conflict
Lara Trump suggested that Iranians might be delaying a solution to gain leverage before the election. She stated that while losing Congress could be a consequence, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities remains a priority.
“When Iran gets a nuclear weapon, control of the House or Senate becomes irrelevant,” Lara Trump said, emphasizing the global security risks involved.
Diverging from Administration Messaging
Her remarks mark a departure from the usual narrative of the Trump administration, which has typically defended the war’s political rationale. Despite unified messaging, there is acknowledgment of voter concerns over rising gas prices as a fallout from the conflict.
Brian Darling, a former counsel for Senator Rand Paul, reiterated these concerns. He told Newsweek, “The midterms may cost Republicans control, given the Iran War and its economic impacts.”
Political Calculations
Lara Trump voiced her belief that the Iranian strategy includes waiting for a more favorable post-midterm negotiation stance. Her comments came during an appearance on Cole’s show, “Harry Cole Saves the West.”
She hinted at mixed feelings within the Trump camp about the ongoing conflict, suggesting frustration with how the situation has unfolded over the past two years.
Despite this, Lara Trump remains hopeful about President Trump’s historical legacy, suggesting it is still in the making.
Public Opinion on the War
Recent polling reflects growing public disapproval of the conflict. An Economist/YouGov poll indicates 57% of Americans believe going to war was a mistake, and 61% desire a swift resolution.
Support among Republicans, though stronger than among Democrats, has been declining. In April, 68% of Republicans supported the war, which fell to 53% by September.
Midterm Election Dynamics
Concerns over the conflict have bolstered Democratic prospects. Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have urged continuity in Congress to further the party’s agenda.
However, Lara Trump’s comments suggest a tactical acceptance of potential losses if it means advancing national security objectives.
Poll aggregators show Democrats leading in voter sentiment. RealClearPolitics shows Democrats with 50.6% support versus 42.3% for Republicans in the congressional ballot.
Broader Concerns
While the Iran War significantly influences voter sentiment, other issues such as living costs, inflation, and healthcare also impact the electorate.
Kyle Kondik from the University of Virginia notes the downturn in Trump’s ratings, attributing broader dissatisfaction, especially with economic issues, as a critical factor.
