A man in Texas was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly planning an attack on the State Capitol. Officials reported that Benny Caldera Jr., 40, was taken into custody early in the morning at his home in Converse, Texas. He faces a felony charge of making a terroristic threat against a public servant and is being held at Bexar County Jail.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued a news release stating that they received credible information on Tuesday about a planned violent attack at the Capitol scheduled for Thursday. DPS special agents collaborated with the FBI and local law enforcement to probe the threat.
At around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, DPS SWAT apprehended Caldera, who is identified as the main suspect. He was quickly transported to jail.
“Outstanding work by @TxDPS. Proud of our @FBISanAntonio team for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our state and local partners. Within HOURS of the tip, @TxDPS had the main suspect in custody — with @FBISanAntonio and local law enforcement assisting. Threaten Americans or our institutions and law enforcement will move FAST,” FBI Director Kash Patel commented on social media.
Caldera’s bond was set at $75,000 following his detention. Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details concerning the alleged attack’s plans or the nature of the verified information received. No additional suspects have been publicly identified at this time.
DPS informed Texas state legislators about the threat and subsequent arrest. The Capitol continues to operate under normal hours, though DPS will ensure increased presence to safeguard employees, state officials, and visitors.
The investigation is ongoing. “Texas DPS and the FBI stopped a planned attack on the Texas Capitol. Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol. Thank you, @TxDPS, for a job well done,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated on social media.
