The Atlanta Dream secured their place in the WNBA semifinals, overcoming the Washington Mystics in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. The Dream, which topped the Eastern Conference in regular-season standings, delivered a decisive 83-75 win on Tuesday night.
Allisha Gray played a crucial role, scoring 22 points to lead her team. This victory marks Atlanta’s first advancement to the semifinals since 2018.
Atlanta continues its playoff journey on Sunday. They will face the New York Liberty in Game 1 of the semifinals. Notably, the Liberty made history by becoming the first No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed, sweeping the Minnesota team.
Angel Reese, a forward for Atlanta, was pivotal in her team’s performance. She celebrated with her teammates after being fouled during the first half of Game 2. Rhyne Howard, another key player who was the top pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft, scored 15 points despite fouling out in the fourth quarter. Reese also contributed with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Mystics faced challenges, including 11 first-half turnovers. Their attempt to regain control came with a 14-2 run in the third quarter, bringing the score to 65-62. However, Atlanta responded with a 13-point run, bolstered by Jordin Canada’s crucial 3-pointer.
This game marked the Mystics’ first playoff since their 2019 WNBA championship. In contrast, the Dream, despite winning the conference title three times from 2010 to 2013, have yet to clinch a WNBA championship.
In other playoff action, the Dallas Wings hosted the Golden State Valkyries in another first-round matchup.
