Austrian Court Convicts Man for Planned Attack on Taylor Swift Concert

In Wiener Neustadt, Austria, a court has convicted a 21-year-old man for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, the defendant is identified as Beran A. due to Austrian privacy rules.

The charges relate to a thwarted plot to target concertgoers at the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. This led to the cancellation of Swift’s three performances in August 2024, disappointing many fans who had traveled to Vienna.

Beran A.’s defense attorney stated that he admitted to the charges on the trial’s opening day last month. In brief final remarks, he expressed remorse, stating, “I would like to say that I am sorry.”

Authorities discovered bomb-making materials in Beran A.’s apartment during a search on August 7, 2024, the day before the concerts were set to begin.

Beran A. reportedly collaborated with the Islamic State group, discussing weapon purchases and bomb-making. Prosecutors also accused him of attempting to illegally obtain weapons and pledging allegiance to the militant group.

Swift acknowledged the concert cancellations on Instagram, expressing a sense of fear and guilt due to the disruption caused to her fans, known as Swifties.

Beran A. was tried with Arda K., another 21-year-old, for additional charges including training for terrorist purposes and involvement in a terrorist organization. They planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024. These charges are connected to an alleged plot involving Hasan E., who remains in detention in Saudi Arabia.

The court also found the defendants guilty of contributing to attempted murder concerning a stabbing incident by Hasan E. in Mecca. This attack resulted in injuries to a security officer, three other officers, and a woman.
