One day after a FlyDubai co-pilot attempted to crash a passenger aircraft, questions about his identity and motive remained unresolved. The flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv faced a crisis when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the flight captain and tried to down the plane. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the co-pilot stabbed the captain, who managed to unlock the cockpit door for passengers to intervene.
Off-duty pilots on the flight assumed control, conducting an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All 174 passengers aboard were unharmed, while the pilot suffered stab wounds. Saudi officials indicated two crew members were hospitalized, and the co-pilot remained in custody.
Identity of the Co-pilot
Details about the co-pilot have not been publicly disclosed. According to an Omani official, the attacker was born in Oman and holds Omani citizenship. The Omani government has not confirmed his nationality. A FlyDubai aircraft was seen departing from Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv shortly before the incident.
Unclear Motive
The co-pilot’s motive is still unknown. Netanyahu speculated it might be a suicide attempt, citing witnesses who noticed efforts to disrupt the plane’s equipment. After subduing the co-pilot, passengers heard him shout for death, Netanyahu shared in an interview with Fox News.
Further insights, according to Netanyahu, suggest that personal information collected pointed toward the co-pilot undergoing Islamist radical indoctrination. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled the event as an attempted jihadist terror attack, referring to the co-pilot as a terrorist. Israeli security personnel are examining the possibility of a Sept. 11-style assault and determining if the co-pilot acted alone.
Ongoing Security Concerns
Netanyahu highlighted growing security risks to Israel amidst operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Passengers were seen in Tabuk Airport following the aircraft’s diversion due to emergency signals.
Interrogation in the UAE
The co-pilot was detained and questioned by Saudi authorities. UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan informed Netanyahu that he anticipated the co-pilot would be transferred to the UAE for further interrogation. Israeli officials plan to join the investigation to clarify the situation. However, it remains uncertain whether the information about Islamist indoctrination surfaced from Saudi or Israeli inquiries.
