A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched on a mission to the International Space Station. The crew consists of two NASA astronauts, a cosmonaut, and a Canadian astronaut. Jessica Watkins leads the mission as Crew 13 commander, with Luke Delaney as the pilot, Sergey Teteryatnikov as the cosmonaut, and Joshua Kutryk representing Canada. The launch marked a significant moment as Kutryk’s wife is expecting their third child while he is in space.
The launch occurred at 11:10 a.m. EDT from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Originally scheduled for mid-September, it was postponed to mend a valve issue in the Crew Dragon’s propulsion system. Watkins, who has a Ph.D. in geology, is the only member with previous spaceflight experience. Delaney and Kutryk bring expertise as former military test pilots, while Teteryatnikov transitioned from the Russian submarine force to become a cosmonaut.
Leaving these three (plus one on the way) is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, wrote Kutryk in a pre-launch message, reflecting on his departure from family.
The Canadian Space Agency continues its collaboration with the U.S. space program. Despite political tensions, Canada contributed notably to the International Space Station’s construction. Kutryk is the 17th Canadian astronaut, following Jeremy Hansen’s Artemis II moon mission.
With the rocket now in space, the Falcon 9’s first stage returned to the Space Force Station, while the Crew Dragon capsule ascended further. The mission synchronized with the ISS’s orbit, taking eight hours to reach the station and dock at its Harmony module.
Jessica Watkins expressed enthusiasm about returning to the ISS and witnessing her crewmates’ experiences. Crew 13 will be busy with tasks like station maintenance, spacewalks, capturing and storing visiting vehicles, and conducting scientific experiments.
On arrival, Crew 13 will replace Crew 12, consisting of Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, Sophie Adenot, and Andrey Fedyaev. Crew 12 will return to Earth after a 237-day mission. Another group aboard the Soyuz MS-29, including Pyotr Dubrov, Anna Kikina, and Anil Menin, will remain on the station for an eight-month stay.
Jessica Meir looks forward to reuniting with her daughter, while Jack Hathaway anticipates a good shower and family time. The Crew Dragon will later collect supplies from SpaceX’s Cargo Dragon, carrying essentials like spare parts and solar panels. These are part of an upgrade to the station’s solar power system started in 2021.
Research on heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, and crop production are among the scientific endeavors planned for Crew 13. They will also study blood flow abnormalities in space and test new medical equipment. Delaney anticipates a productive stay filled with science and spacewalks.
