Russian Drone Strikes Intensify in Kyiv
Russian drones have targeted Kyiv in recent strikes, raising concerns about a potential campaign by President Vladimir Putin. The attacks aim to pressure Ukraine as winter approaches, possibly forcing them to submit.
One notable incident involved a drone hitting a school in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district. A fire ensued, but fortunately, children and teachers were sheltered safely. Later, two drones damaged supports near Kyiv’s Southern Bridge, disrupting metro services.
These events follow a significant drone and missile strike targeting Kyiv’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian Economy Minister Oleksandr Kravchenko warns of a harsh winter ahead. Mark Galeotti, a podcast host, suggests Russia’s campaign aims to weaken Ukraine’s economy, impacting Europe, which may bear reconstruction costs.
Latest Attacks and Ukraine’s Response
Kyiv faces persistent drone attacks that challenge air defenses. An extended air raid alert occurred, and overnight strikes resulted in casualties, with six dead and 38 injured. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi highlighted Russia’s largest combined strike on energy facilities to date.
The Ukrainian monitoring channel eRadar predicts increased strikes on power facilities, potentially cutting off nuclear power plants and isolating Kyiv. Despite Russia’s efforts, Ukraine reports progress in its counteroffensive, “Operation Vivaldi.” Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky noted gains in Donetsk oblast, countering Russian attempts to encircle key cities.
Facing limited frontline success, Russia turns to long-range missile and drone attacks to pressure Ukraine during winter. The Institute for the Study of War suggests Putin aims to undermine Ukraine’s defenses before peace negotiations. Galeotti believes Putin seeks control over key cities via economic destruction.
Ukraine’s Strategy Against Russia
Ukraine retaliates with drone and missile strikes on Russian territory, specifically targeting oil and gas sites. These attacks have caused fuel shortages, evident in Moscow and surrounding areas.
Ukrainian forces conduct regular assaults on Russian infrastructure. The capital and regions like Yaroslavl, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and Leningrad have faced attacks on refineries and storage facilities.
ACLED data shows an average of three such strikes monthly since May 2026. As explosions occur, Russia’s population is increasingly aware of the conflict’s impact. Analyst Tetiana Gaviuk notes that the war’s consequences are becoming harder for Russians to ignore.
