CBS Sports has confirmed that Tony Romo will not be returning to the network. Tony Romo was placed on indefinite leave in July following his arrest for driving while intoxicated. The network released a statement saying, “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways.” CBS expressed gratitude for Romo’s nine years of contributions and extended their best wishes for his future.

According to industry sources cited by OutKick, the expectation was that Romo would not return. The DWI charge accelerated CBS’s decision to end its association with Romo. The network had already decided to move in a different direction.
CBS will be airing their next Super Bowl in 2028. This event will be the first under the Skydance ownership backed by David Ellison. CBS was not inclined to keep Romo as the lead analyst alongside Jim Nantz for another Super Bowl cycle. Over recent seasons, Romo faced increasing criticism from viewers and media.
The criticism peaked during Super Bowl LVIII when Romo mishandled the commentary on Patrick Mahomes’ game-winning touchdown pass in overtime. This incident was viewed as indicative of his declining performance in the broadcast booth.
Currently, CBS has appointed former NFL star J.J. Watt as Jim Nantz’s color analyst. Watt was promoted to this position from the network’s No. 2 team following Romo’s suspension. While feedback on Watt’s performance has been mixed, positive reviews confirm his aptitude for the role.
The long-term replacement for Romo is still undecided. ESPN’s Troy Aikman and Fox’s Greg Olsen are considered potential candidates. Both their contracts expire after the upcoming Super Bowl in February. Despite the uncertainty of Watt’s tenure, his established rapport with Jim Nantz could give him an edge.
Olsen has already gained Super Bowl experience, having commented on Super Bowl LVII for Fox. He adapted quickly to different play-by-play partners, demonstrating his flexibility. If ESPN doesn’t re-sign Aikman, Olsen could also consider joining CBS or ESPN.
If neither Aikman nor Olsen signs with CBS or ESPN, Netflix may emerge as a potential contender. In related developments, Amazon has re-signed Kirk Herbstreit as its lead NFL color analyst.
