President Donald Trump proposed naming Alabama’s Mobile Bay bridge project after himself, resurging his trend of associating his brand with notable public landmarks. Speaking at a Mobile rally, Trump highlighted the inauguration of the Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, a long-awaited infrastructure venture estimated to cost more than $4 billion.
“All made possible with $3 billion in funding from the Trump administration,” Trump said, mentioning the federal financial support for the project. He then pondered the idea of the bridge carrying his name, declaring, “Maybe I’ll be happy, and they’ll name the damn bridge after me.” He remarked, “Then I’ll say, have all the overruns you want, make it just absolutely the greatest bridge in the world.”
His statements followed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s participation in a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, linking Mobile with Alabama’s Eastern Shore communities. Trump and supporters have highlighted the federal contribution as a significant infrastructure accomplishment for Alabama.
Videos circulated on social media displaying vacant sections inside Mobile’s Mitchell Center during Trump’s address. Despite his strong appeal in Alabama, some seating areas remained unoccupied. Although the event gathered thousands of supporters, videos of partly filled arenas sparked online discussions about Trump’s political standing, especially with declining approval ratings in recent polls.
Despite the visual implications, Trump addressed his supporters cheering for his remarks on immigration, Iran, infrastructure funding, and the economy. The crowd responded enthusiastically to the federal funding comments for the Mobile Bay bridge project.
The Massive Infrastructure Undertaking
Alabama officials state the project is the largest infrastructure development in the state’s history. The first phase comprises the construction of a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Mobile River, connecting to the Bayway corridor between Mobile and Daphne. Fully funded, this initial phase is slated for completion by 2031. A second phase, still unfunded, involves replacing the current Bayway with an elevated interstate structure over Mobile Bay.
The bridge has been a political subject in Alabama, as congestion along the I-10 corridor has long vexed residents, commuters, and businesses.
Trump Name Proposal
Trump’s remarks were not without precedent. Earlier that Friday, Republican Representative Barry Moore, running for Senate, suggested naming the bridge “Gateway to America Donald J. Trump Bridge.” This idea has circulated among Trump supporters in Alabama, coinciding with the project’s advancement.
However, not everyone supported the notion. Former Democratic Senator Doug Jones ridiculed the idea on social media before the rally, claiming Trump prioritized personal legacy over campaigning. Jones noted that Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville had previously opposed parts of the bridge funding debate.
Trump has a history of attaching his name to buildings, projects, and institutions throughout his career. Since resuming office, his allies have proposed honoring him through public facilities and landmarks, though few proposals have evolved past initial discussions.
Similarities with the Kennedy Center Dispute
The bridge remarks echo ongoing controversy over Trump’s attempts to influence the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Since returning to the White House, Trump has appointed allies at the Center and criticized its previous leadership and programming, attracting backlash from critics and some figures in the arts community.
Trump and allies have further suggested naming public institutions and projects after him. Such ideas have involved Washington Dulles International Airport and other transit hubs and landmarks. The bridge discussion exemplifies Trump’s willingness to entertain the notion of major projects carrying his name.
Trump’s comments encouraged considerations on Alabama’s most significant infrastructure project amid discussions by supporters and allies about his name augmenting public landmarks.
