Southern California is bracing for a substantial heatwave expected to raise temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal levels. The National Weather Service predicts this heatwave will last through at least next week.
The extreme heat arrives as the Dodgers face off against Atlanta in the first game of the National League Division Series on Saturday. Forecasts suggest temperatures could reach as high as 95 degrees on the field.
An extreme heat advisory is in effect for many areas starting 10 a.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Thursday. There is a possibility of extension if conditions persist. The public is urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, remain in air-conditioned environments, and check on the well-being of family and friends.
A robust high-pressure system will form over the eastern Pacific and West Coast starting Friday, strengthening through Sunday. This will result in significantly higher temperatures across the region.
In downtown Los Angeles, temperatures could soar between 99 and 103 degrees. Valleys are expected to see temperatures from 102 to 107 degrees, while coastal areas from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles might witness 90 to 98 degrees over the weekend.
Higher temperatures are likely to occur from Wednesday to Friday, with potential to set new daily records. The arrival of tropical moisture by next weekend might offer some relief by cooling the region.
Additionally, Hurricane Rachel is forecasted to bring higher surfing waves from 5 to 6 feet, affecting beaches from Tuesday through Thursday. This follows a summer of elevated surf that has caused notable coastal erosion at some of California’s most-visited beaches.
