The international price of Brent crude oil remained around $100 per barrel on Monday. This price reflects the conflict between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government and Iran’s Houthi allies regarding control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Reports suggest a crucial Saudi pipeline was hit recently.
Kpler, a maritime intelligence firm, noted that Middle East oil exports, excluding those from Iran, exceeded pre-war levels in September. This increase is due to producers using alternative routes through the Red Sea. However, ongoing conflicts could add uncertainty to this supply route.
President Trump and Tehran Negotiations
Following a rejection by President Trump of Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian officials are formulating a response. This situation comes as Iranian threats toward the Strait of Hormuz continue to loom.
Saudi Aramco CEO Warns of Thin Oil Stockpiles
Saudi Aramco’s chief executive, Amin Nasser, warned of dangerously low global oil stockpiles. This warning came shortly after G7 nations agreed to release more inventories to alleviate supply concerns. Nasser emphasized the limited alternatives available to the world and described the current supply cushion as ‘scarily thin.’
The statement follows news of oil flows from the Middle East reaching pre-war levels. However, continuous battles between Saudi-backed forces and Iran’s Houthi rebels in Yemen over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait pose additional risks.
East-West Pipeline Controversy
The East-West Crude Oil Pipeline in Saudi Arabia reportedly suffered another attack, halting oil flow. But conflicting reports indicate oil may still be flowing through the pipeline. Attacks on this significant infrastructure have recurred since the outbreak of war.
Saudi Arabia previously closed the pipeline, spanning approximately 700 miles, from September 11 to 22 as tensions in the region heightened.
Yemen Military and Houthi Conflict
The Yemeni military announced extensive strikes on Houthi targets as part of a broader campaign to reclaim lost territory. Despite these efforts, Houthi forces continue gaining ground on the Red Sea coastline, posing a significant challenge to the Saudi-backed government.
In recent battles, the loss of life on both sides has been substantial, according to local sources. The region remains fraught with violence affecting the critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Diplomacy and Military Tensions
Iran’s Foreign Minister stated that military actions will not end the conflict with the U.S., advocating for negotiations based on fairness. Despite this, Iran continues to attempt to control the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. has countered with a blockade of Iranian ports.
While both nations signed an understanding in June to create a permanent resolution framework, renewed hostilities have revived military operations.
Oil Export Dynamics
Recent data shows Middle Eastern oil exports, not including Iran, have surpassed pre-war levels. Producers are using the Red Sea route to circumvent Iran’s attempted blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iran claims control over the strait as the risk of attacks remains high. The blockade situation reflects ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global oil markets.
Energy Policies Under Scrutiny
Energy Secretary Chris Wright mentioned President Trump’s awareness of energy flow risks before the Iranian conflict. Wright highlighted concerns over a nuclear-armed Iran, suggesting strategic considerations took precedence over short-term energy pricing.
He anticipates a decrease in prices due to increased supplies and reduced seasonal demand, aligning with political strategies ahead of upcoming elections.
U.S. and Iranian Diplomatic Push
Iran is reviewing the U.S. response following the rejection of its conditions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials stressed the necessity of ending maritime disruptions and lifting sanctions for any progress.
The ongoing conflict underscores broader geopolitical struggles as the U.S. aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities, exacerbating energy market fluctuations.
