Players considering a commitment to LIV Golf now have more time to decide. The league has extended its deadline for player commitment from October 13 to October 25. This move comes after BC Partners made its initial investment in ‘LIV 2.0,’ aiming to inject $300 million and lift the circuit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy in September following the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s decision to withdraw financial support by 2026. The Saudis had invested $5 billion since the league’s inception in 2022.
‘While the future of LIV Golf remains in question, BC Partners’ financial commitment just before bankruptcy hearings is a positive step,’ noted the league.
BC Partners’ investment requires bankruptcy approval. If approved, LIV plans to establish a 2027 season with a 10-tournament schedule, half of which will be international.
Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners stated, ‘We want players to share in what they help build. Offering real ownership is a unique opportunity in professional golf.’
In August, it was announced that players in LIV Golf’s next iteration would hold a majority of equity. CEO Scott O’Neil emphasized that the league is to be ‘driven by and for the players.’
Notable players still associated with LIV include Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, and Tyrrell Hatton. With the league’s bankruptcy and restructuring, players might be released from contracts, opening up new opportunities. Currently, the PGA Tour is not presenting a clear path for players returning from LIV.
