Bruce Arians Shares Prostate Cancer Survival Story
The NFL’s “Crucial Catch” initiative, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, focuses on early cancer detection, risk reduction, and screening awareness. Former Super Bowl-winning head coach Bruce Arians shares his prostate cancer survival story, emphasizing the ease of modern screenings.
Arians is involved with Novartis in the “Relax, It’s a Blood Test” campaign, highlighting the importance of early detection. In 2007, a PSA blood test led to the early identification and successful treatment of his prostate cancer.
One in eight men in the United States are going to have prostate cancer, and early detection is the key. It’s a simple finger-free blood test,” Arians told OutKick.
He recalls the shock of his diagnosis, noting how crucial the PSA test was. Many men dismiss early symptoms like frequent bathroom visits at night. Arians encourages men to start a “scorecard” by checking PSA levels annually with their doctor.
Arians underwent a successful procedure, continuing work with a catheter soon after. He credits his recovery to excellent medical care and advocates awareness through his partnership with Novartis. Utilizing a bit of humor, he joined the campaign with Rob Gronkowski and Tony Gonzalez to stress that tests can begin with a PSA rather than a rectal exam.
The five-year relative survival rate for early-detected prostate cancer exceeds 99%. Arians emphasizes the importance of proactive screenings.
It’s so easy to make sure this doesn’t happen to you. Get your PSA level checked every single year,” Arians advises.
Keeping informed through regular medical visits can be life-saving, especially for those who typically avoid doctor appointments.
