U.S. officials are advising Americans to avoid visiting Djerba, a well-known tourist island in Tunisia. This advisory corresponds with elevated threats linked to the anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.
The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia issued this warning on Sunday. Djerba, located off Tunisia’s southern coast, is famed for its sandy beaches and luxurious resorts.
Avoid travel to the island of Djerba on or around Oct. 7, 2026.
The advisory further suggests avoiding large gatherings and staying aware of one’s environment. It advises against being in areas with a strong police presence and recommends monitoring local media while keeping a low profile. The warning stems from concerns about heightened threats related to the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. This attack, occurring on October 7, 2023, resulted in over 1,200 fatalities and thousands of injuries, leading to the Israel-Hamas war.
This attack also sparked an increase in antisemitism globally. Such concerns are relevant in Djerba, which houses a Jewish community. Djerba, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a Jewish settlement history stretching back nearly 2,000 years, as per the World Jewish Congress. Annually, many Jewish visitors come to Djerba to celebrate the Lag B’Omer festival.
According to certain traditions, Jewish presence in Tunisia dates back to the Punic Empire and beyond. Despite the historical presence, only around 1,000 Jews reside in Tunisia today, a stark reduction from the past century’s numbers.
The State Department rates Tunisia as “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.” Common petty crime, especially in tourist hotspots, and violent crime, which is more frequent at night, are concerns. Some border areas with Libya and Algeria are rated “Level 4: Do Not Travel” due to terrorism risks.
Terrorist activities remain a continued threat in Tunisia. Groups may execute attacks unexpectedly. This situation has put the historic Jewish community and international tourists in Djerba under increased scrutiny.
