Kevin Korchinski finds himself in a unique position as the 2026-27 season kicks off. As a restricted free agent during much of the offseason, there were concerns about his future with the Chicago Blackhawks. While other restricted free agents like Connor Bedard and Drew Commesso secured their new contracts, speculation about Korchinski lingered until he signed a two-year, $2.65 million deal on August 29.
“It was out of my control, so I didn’t really pay too much attention,” Korchinski stated on September 18, expressing confidence despite the uncertainty. “Friends and players asked when I’d sign, but I focused on improving. I spent a month working with various coaches, which was beneficial. It was a productive summer.”
General Manager Kyle Davidson shared a relaxed perspective on the timing of contracts for Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro, who secured a two-year, $1.9 million contract. Davidson commented on September 17, “We had other business before that, so timing wasn’t too significant. It’s their role to continue growing, gaining experience, and pushing for playing time when opportunities arise.”
Roster Decisions
Korchinski is no longer waiver-exempt, requiring the Blackhawks to keep him on their roster to prevent another team from claiming him. Despite offseason additions like Bowen Byram and Ian Cole, Korchinski’s new contract suggests larger plans for him as the 2022 draft’s No. 7 pick.
During the preseason, Korchinski appeared against the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues, although these were with AHL-heavy lineups. The finalized opening roster announced on September 26 included 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders. Korchinski and Del Mastro were among the eight defensemen. Coach Jeff Blashill indicated that last season’s 11-forward, seven-defensemen lineup might not be repeated.
Korchinski and Del Mastro debuted in the season’s opening game against Buffalo, filling in due to Byram’s family commitments. Korchinski logged 11 minutes and 21 seconds on the ice, the least among defensemen.
Korchinski’s Development
For now, Korchinski remains a backup option, as there is little indication of a return to the lineup unless injuries or circumstances affect the top six defensemen. “Practice intensely and attentively,” Korchinski advised, stressing personal accountability in building trust.
Despite challenges, including his struggles as a rookie with 15 points and a minus-39 rating in 76 games, Korchinski believes in preparation. “Ensure readiness when the opportunity arises,” he said. Observing leaders like Byram and Cole provides valuable learning opportunities, enhancing his skills in practical ways.
Cole’s one-year contract suggests a possible timeline for Korchinski’s more significant role. Whether this will maximize Korchinski’s potential is uncertain. His readiness, ability to learn, and persistence are central to his development.
