Tony Romo Faces Challenges Both On and Off the Course
Tony Romo, former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback, has not had a smooth journey recently. Over the summer, he faced legal trouble when arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin. Police body cam footage of his arrest quickly gained traction on the internet, and his mugshot became widely circulated. Memes about the 46-year-old further spread the story.
As a prominent football analyst for CBS Sports, Romo’s arrest sparked much speculation regarding his television career. The network soon announced his indefinite leave, leading to rumors about his future.
Eventually, in early October, news surfaced that CBS and Romo had decided to part ways permanently. This was a significant setback for him. While initially celebrated for his TV analysis, fans had grown critical. Additionally, despite being owed a large sum on his contract, Romo was now out of a job.
Adding to Romo’s challenges, he participated in a pre-qualifier tournament for a Korn Ferry Tour event. Though not on the PGA Tour level, his involvement demonstrated his skill as a golfer. Unfortunately, on the same day he left CBS, he faced disqualification from the pre-qualifier.
While trying to progress, Romo encountered an issue with his scorecard. Golf.com reported that at the Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Romo played rounds of 76 and 75. This left him well behind the leaders by 13 strokes after 36 holes. Still, he had a chance to advance by performing well on the final day.
The problem arose when there were three conflicting accounts of Romo’s score during the third round. Romo marked a 4 on the 16th hole and a 4 on the 17th hole. However, his partner and marker, Brandon Rice, recorded a 4 on the 16th and a 5 on the 17th. A PGA Pro and walking referee added a third variation, recalling a 5 on both holes. This discrepancy led to Romo’s disqualification.
Rob Keller, the pre-qualifier administrator, explained to Golf.com that Romo may not have checked his score thoroughly due to slow play and other factors. According to Keller, Romo accepted responsibility during their conversation and praised the tournament’s quality.
Even if his third-round score wouldn’t have allowed advancement, these missteps represent a harsh day for the former quarterback. Accurate scoring is crucial, especially with an observer present. Romo’s disqualification suggests that golf may not be his career path after CBS.
OutKick writer Ian Miller noted that Romo’s performance raises questions about his future endeavors beyond sports analysis.
