Trump Endorses Pamela Evette for Governor of South Carolina
President Trump endorsed South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, Pamela Evette, for the position of the state’s next governor. This endorsement follows the recent adjournment of a special session by state lawmakers without voting on a new congressional map.
Ms. Evette has been a vocal supporter of redrawing the state’s congressional map to favor Republicans in the midterms. The proposed map aimed to eliminate South Carolina’s only majority Black district, creating an entirely Republican delegation.
Trump praised Evette on Truth Social, calling her a ‘good friend, fighter, and WINNER,’ highlighting her loyalty and support for him. By endorsing Evette, Trump aligns with the current governor, Henry McMaster, who is term-limited and wishes for Evette to succeed him.
In his statement, Trump also expressed that he anticipates Evette would select Henry McMaster Jr., the current governor’s son, as her running mate for lieutenant governor.
The Republican primary race for governor includes six candidates. Notable candidates are Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, Alan Wilson, the state’s attorney general, and Rom Reddy, a former business executive. Both the Democratic and Republican parties are holding their primary elections on June 9.
