American truckers are facing financial strain as diesel prices skyrocket. The sharp increase in fuel costs threatens their profits and is pushing trucking companies to consider reducing routes. This pressure raises concerns that some drivers may be forced off the road, ultimately impacting consumers at the grocery store.
“Fuel prices are rising, but rates for hauling aren’t,” Miami-based trucker Suave Dorsett explained. “It’s impacting our earnings significantly.” This situation unfolds as the conflict involving Iran causes diesel prices to rise further.
The national average for diesel soared to about $6.32 per gallon recently, according to AAA. This marks a rise from around $3.69 during the same period last year, reflecting a 70% increase. The current price surge has overtaken the previous high of $5.816 per gallon set in June 2022.
Dorsett, who has driven trucks for nine years, encountered diesel prices of $7.40 per gallon while in Ohio. He detailed the financial burden on truckers, noting costs for diesel exhaust fluid, parking, showers, load weighing, repairs, and towing. Dorsett foresees a ‘domino effect’ where smaller operators may fail first, leading to broader industry impacts.
Tyler Rinaldi, another trucker from Louisiana, confirmed reductions in weekend routes at his company. “I’ve noticed cuts in routes,” Rinaldi mentioned. “The company isn’t running as many trips on weekends now.” This shift could result in less income for drivers.
Avante Jackson, an experienced trucker from North Carolina, pointed out that rising diesel prices force truckers to assess their profitability closely. “If all my profit goes toward fuel, what’s left to keep the business running?” Jackson said. While he advises against panic over shortages, he warns that a driver shortage could affect consumers.
The recent spike in diesel prices mirrors similar circumstances in 2022. Back then, fuel costs surged due to the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. According to the American Transportation Research Institute, fuel costs for trucking increased by 53.7% in 2022, contributing to a 21.3% spike in operating costs to $2.25 per mile.
The Trump administration has urged international partners to release emergency fuel reserves to ease current pressure. Truckers hope their plight remains on the administration’s radar. “Remember the drivers who keep America moving,” Jackson urged. “Think about us as we face these challenges. Let’s bring fuel prices down to benefit everyone.”
President Trump, on Truth Social, described higher fuel prices as a temporary sacrifice in preventing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Recently, a deal was made with European countries to release 100 million barrels of emergency reserves, including diesel, to help stabilize the market.
The administration has promised not to ban diesel exports and believes that oil prices could fall once the conflict with Iran resolves. “President Trump has enacted an order to cut diesel costs, returning savings directly to American truckers,” stated White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers. “Efforts are underway to restore fuel supplies and ease market pressures.”
