Kaneland High School’s senior running back, Colton Ludwig, defies expectations with his performance on the field. Standing at 5-foot-7 and weighing 140 pounds, Ludwig is not hindered by his size. His recent achievements reflect a fearless attitude. ‘It’s my favorite thing to do,’ Ludwig stated. ‘I love it.’
Ludwig attributes his determination to his refusal to be defined by his stature. ‘No one really frightens me on the defense,’ he explained. ‘Just run hard, run through people.’
Ludwig has thrived in the last two weeks for the Knights, accumulating consecutive 200-yard rushing games, positioning him near the 1,000-yard milestone as he approaches Friday’s regular-season finale against Metea Valley in Aurora.
Kaneland coach Mike Thorgesen commented on Ludwig’s running style. ‘He’s picking up a lot of yards and he’s fun to watch,’ Thorgesen said, adding that Ludwig excels despite his build. ‘He’s just tough, runs low, kind of a fearless running.’
Ludwig leads his team with 896 yards and nine touchdowns on 109 carries, while sophomore Timmy Boryc supports with 496 yards and five touchdowns on 55 carries. Senior linebacker Jackson Little, at 210 pounds, has scored eight touchdowns despite a lower yardage.
Ludwig’s recent performances include a 213-yard, two-touchdown game against LaSalle-Peru and a 212-yard, three-touchdown match against Ottawa. His play began with a striking 60-yard score.
Ludwig attributes his production to increased opportunities. ‘They’re just giving me the ball,’ he noted. ‘I’m running through people.’
Coach Thorgesen appreciates Kaneland’s varied running game but embraces Ludwig’s leadership. ‘We have three good running backs. Colton has taken the lead.’
Kaneland maintains a versatile offensive strategy, complementing their running game with an effective air attack. Brody Guthrie completes 72 of 116 passes for 1,387 yards and 17 touchdowns. Receivers Cooper Stombres and Colton VanDyke contribute prominently.
‘We kind of just take what’s there,’ Thorgesen explained. ‘When we see we can run the ball, we’re balanced.’
Ludwig acknowledges the positive impact of their receiving corps, attributing defensive pressure to stellar receivers.
Kaneland’s Class 5A team faces a formidable challenge against Metea Valley’s 8A team.
Coach Thorgesen views the matchup as a playoff simulation, anticipating potential postseason success.
‘I’m excited to see what’s to come,’ Ludwig shared, expressing confidence in the team’s playoff prospects.
