Christa Pike has left the hospital and returned to her prison cell following an unsuccessful execution attempt. This information comes from a statement released by her legal team.
“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years,” stated her attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, Luke Ihnen, Randy Spivey, and Kelly Gleason.
The legal team expressed Pike’s gratitude towards first responders and the medical team who assisted her during the unexpected situation. They added, “She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery.”
On September 30, authorities transported Pike, age 50, to the hospital after she survived two administrations of the lethal drug pentobarbital. Officials intended to execute her for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer.
Her attorneys described her physical recovery as “remarkable” in an update, while noting ongoing concerns about potential long-term effects and her current legal status.
This botched execution has reignited discussions about the methods states use for capital punishment, especially lethal injections.
This article is part of an unfolding news story. More updates will be provided as they become available.
