Late Friday night, five individuals were found dead from gunshot wounds in a home in South Georgia. The Douglas Police Department (DPD) responded to a call on Robin Lane in the Touchton Woods neighborhood at 11:09 p.m. There, officers discovered five individuals who appeared to have been shot. The incident is under an ongoing investigation.
Local news outlet Douglas Now indicated that investigators are considering the situation as an apparent murder-suicide. As of Saturday morning, police have not identified the victims or disclosed any information regarding a suspect.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office expressed sorrow in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, calling the event a “terrible tragedy.” They extended condolences to the affected families and asked the community to pray for them and the first responders present at the scene.
Douglas, a city within Coffee County in southern Georgia, is located around 115 miles northwest of Jacksonville, Florida. It has an estimated population of 11,864, based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimate for July 2025.
Newsweek reached out to both the DPD and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday for additional details.
Rising Trend of Mass Shootings
The incident comes amid a spate of mass shootings in Georgia. A separate mass shooting occurred on Friday night in Erie, Pennsylvania. This incident resulted in the death of nine individuals, two of whom were children.
The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) categorizes a mass shooting as an event where at least four people are shot, injured, or killed, not including the shooter. This recent tragedy in Coffee County is now the third consecutive weekend with reported multi-victim gun violence in Georgia.
A previous shooting at a homecoming event in Vienna, Georgia, resulted in two fatalities and 35 injuries. This incident occurred about 80 miles northwest of Douglas.
Another incident at an 18th birthday celebration in Macon on September 27 left 12 teenagers injured. Five suspects faced charges related to that event, including a 15-year-old charged as an adult.
DPD continues its investigation of the recent shooting and plans to release more information later on Saturday.
