Texas Senate Race Tightens Amid Talarico’s Lead and Controversies
Democrat James Talarico currently holds a narrow lead over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race. A recent Trafalgar poll showed Talarico edging Paxton by over 3 points among 1,086 likely voters in Texas. Talarico’s support sits at 47.1%, compared to Paxton’s 43.6%. Libertarian Ted Brown garnered 1.8%, while 7.6% of respondents were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of ±2.9 percentage points.
Despite Texas being historically inclined towards Republicans, the race is tightening as midterm elections approach. Democrats see an opportunity to flip the Senate seat due to Paxton’s unfavorable ratings and a declining national approval for President Donald Trump. Republicans aim to leverage Texas’s partisan loyalty to support Paxton, investing heavily in the race and receiving campaign support from Trump.
“Democrats need to secure wins in conservative regions this year to flip the Senate, where Republicans hold a 53-47 majority. Four GOP-held seats are needed for Democrats to gain a majority, with Vice President JD Vance serving as a tiebreaker in an evenly divided chamber.”
The absence of Talarico from campaigning, caused by flu, allowed Republicans to mock him for being off the trail. His absence sparked speculation, but he later appeared at the ACL Music Festival, confirming his return to campaigning soon.
Talarico’s lead is also reflected in previous polls, including a September survey from the Times and Siena University showing him ahead by 6 points. Prediction markets indicate a marginal advantage for Talarico, giving him higher chances of victory.
A win in Texas would be a major milestone for Democrats, especially in a state with a long history of Republican victories. Though suburban areas in Texas have gradually shifted Democrat in recent years, Republicans performed strongly in 2024 among Hispanic voters. Paxton faces vulnerabilities due to scandals including a 2023 impeachment over bribery allegations, which he denied.
The Texas Senate race is exceedingly expensive, with over $440 million spent by both parties. Republican efforts have notably doubled Democrat spending, aiming to secure the seat.
The race is considered critical for the midterms, with polling agencies labeling it a toss-up. As early voting begins on October 19, candidates will intensify their campaigns, although no debates are scheduled.
