A man lost his life after being attacked by a tiger at a wildlife park in northern England. The incident occurred when the individual entered the tiger enclosure, according to police reports.
South Yorkshire Police were alerted to the situation at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster around 1:35 p.m. local time. Despite prompt efforts by emergency responders, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities confirmed the man’s family had been notified and are receiving support from specialist officers. They also addressed concerns regarding the tiger involved in the incident, assuring the public that the animal was unharmed and remained within its enclosure. “There is no wider risk to the public,” police emphasized.
The Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s “Land of the Tigers” exhibit, featuring Amur tigers, has been part of the park since 2011. Visitors usually enjoy observing the tigers from a raised walkway measuring 300 meters in length.
Wildlife Park Closes for Investigation
The park was evacuated following the incident and announced it would remain closed on Sunday to facilitate an ongoing investigation. Police discouraged the public from sharing videos of the attack circulating online.
Witnesses reportedly noted that the man seemed agitated before entering the enclosure, though official details about the circumstances are still unclear.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park labeled the event a “serious incident” and stated that emergency protocols were immediately put into action. The park affirmed its commitment to the safety of visitors, staff, and animals.
A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service mentioned that multiple emergency resources, including two ambulances, a doctor, and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, were dispatched to the site.
The investigation into the man’s death continues.
Similar Incidents at U.S. Zoos
Although rare, incidents involving individuals entering big-cat enclosures at U.S. zoos have occurred.
One notable case happened in 2012 at New York City’s Bronx Zoo. David Villalobos jumped from the Wild Asia Monorail into a tiger enclosure, resulting in severe injuries. Zoo staff rescued him, and he later faced trespassing charges.
Another instance occurred at Naples Zoo in Florida in December 2021. River Rosenquist, an outside contractor, put his arm through a tiger enclosure fence. The tiger grabbed him, and a sheriff’s deputy shot the animal to free him. Rosenquist survived but sustained serious injuries.
Recent Incidents at St. Louis and New Jersey Zoos
In August, a man climbed over fencing at the Saint Louis Zoo’s Big Cat Country exhibit. He sat on a barrier above a tiger habitat but returned unharmed to the public area. No injuries were reported, and zoo officials reviewed potential safety changes.
In New Jersey in 2024, a woman was charged after climbing a fence at Cohanzick Zoo and approaching a tiger enclosure. She withdrew after the tiger reacted aggressively and was subsequently charged with defiant trespassing.
