SOUTH BEND, Ind. — In a dominant performance at Notre Dame Stadium, Irish defensive standout Boubacar Traore set the tone from the first second against Stanford. Traore shot through the line unblocked and tackled quarterback Davis Warren from behind. The loose football became an opportunity for Notre Dame linebacker Jaiden Ausberry, who gained possession at Stanford’s 18-yard line. Four plays later, Nolan James Jr. found a gap for a short 2-yard touchdown, setting the stage for an early lead.
While not every aspect of the game came effortlessly, Notre Dame established a commanding 37-point lead by halftime en route to a 58-7 victory. This success increased their record to 26-14 in the longstanding Legends Trophy rivalry, including a 4-1 streak under coach Marcus Freeman.
There were multiple instances of effortless execution. Freshman running back Jonaz Walton showcased his speed in the second quarter by racing 97 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-0. Not long after, Traore intercepted a Warren pass, returning it 18 yards; this contributed to a Spencer Porath 33-yard field goal.
Later, Aneyas Williams excelled by outmaneuvering Stanford’s Jahsiah Galvan for a 70-yard touchdown after receiving a pass from quarterback CJ Carr. Given that Stanford faced significant setbacks earlier this season, such a comprehensive win by Notre Dame was not unexpected.
Notre Dame, holding a 6-0 record, faced less formidable competition from Stanford, who entered the game at 2-4. The Irish experienced challenges in part of their schedule, yet emerged victorious in their contests, including against Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State, Purdue, and North Carolina, playing with minimal complications.
Looking ahead, Notre Dame faces a series of more rigorous challenges as they vie for a spot in the College Football Playoff. The next matchup against a top-ranked team occurs on Oct. 17, when they travel to face No. 8 BYU.
“They’re ultimate competitors, and they want to play the best,” Freeman stated about his team, emphasizing the need to savor successes along the season’s journey.
After BYU, further tests include hosting No. 4 Miami in a rematch of their previous season opener, and facing No. 24 SMU, defining moments in their pursuit of a playoff berth. Freeman has underscored the importance of respecting each opponent, evident in this decisive win against Stanford.
Quarterback CJ Carr illustrated versatility, going 14 of 20 for 181 yards and scoring three touchdowns, coupled with 41 rushing yards. As focus persists on the running game, following last season’s departure of key players Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, Walton, and James significantly contributed on the ground.
Walton ended his day with 13 carries totaling 181 yards and achieved two touchdowns. His explosive 97-yard touchdown was a record-setting effort for a true freshman at Notre Dame, breaking Josh Adams’ 2015 mark. Freeman praised Walton’s consistent effort in practice, crediting it for increased gameplay opportunities.
Other contributors included James with 73 yards and two touchdowns from 10 carries, and Aneyas Williams, who combined rushing yards with a noteworthy touchdown reception. Receiving scores also came from Jaden Greathouse and Elijah Burress, the latter marking his first career touchdown.
Defensively, the Irish managed without some starters, still completing a strong performance. Despite being down key players like linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa and cornerback Leonard Moore due to injuries, the defense restricted Stanford’s offense, allowing a single touchdown in the third quarter.
Freeman emphasized the significance of team depth in the season’s long haul, ensuring options are available across positions due to potential injuries. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s depth, appreciating their performance in given roles.
“It’s crucial at every position,” stated Freeman, highlighting the necessity for depth to sustain competitiveness over the course and trials of a lengthy football season.
