A devastating attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, claimed 12 lives and left over 300 individuals injured, as reported by civil aviation authorities early Sunday. This incident is regarded as the most deadly attack in Gulf Arab countries since the onset of the Iran war, marked by escalated conflict between Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and Saudi-supported government forces.
The recent assault resulted in casualties including four Saudi citizens, along with victims from Bangladesh, Palestine, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Sudan. The injured have been receiving medical treatment across multiple hospitals. This attack is part of a series targeting the airport, resulting in increased pressure on Saudi Arabia’s allies, including the United States, to support military efforts.
President Donald Trump announced an evaluation regarding the potential U.S. military response in support of Saudi Arabia, following the attack. Trump stated, “We may. We’re going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack. So we’ll make a decision. We move very quickly.”
A missile hit terminals 3 and 4 dedicated to domestic flights, confirmed by a regional official. This individual spoke anonymously, lacking authorization to talk to the media. With the surge in violence, including strikes on other airports and oil infrastructure, a suspension of Riyadh airport operations was implemented, causing flight diversions and a heavy police presence.
Countries such as the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, and Canada issued warnings to citizens advising avoidance of the airport, later extending condolences. Concurrently, the Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting a Houthi ballistic missile and another projectile impacting near King Fahd International Airport.
Despite the turbulence impacting Saudi Arabia, the nation continued its agenda by promoting a significant international energy conference scheduled to commence in Riyadh. The escalating confrontation between Houthis and Saudi-aligned Yemeni forces has seen air support provided by the Saudi-led coalition, aiming to overturn Houthi advancements along the Red Sea coast.
The Houthis assert their focus is solely on Saudi shipping, retaliating against an imposed blockade, while broader concerns of extended attacks persist. Past actions include targeting ships after the Gaza conflict, claimed as solidarity with Palestinians, restrained by U.S. intervention.
With dwindling missile interceptors, Saudi Arabia seeks air defense assistance from France, Britain, Pakistan, and Egypt. Notably, U.S. stocks have similarly decreased amidst the Iran conflict. Assistance to Saudi Arabia involves intelligence support, target identification, and strategic planning against Houthis.
Furthermore, discussions between Saudi and Omani foreign ministers emphasize supporting diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions. Oman often serves as a mediator in regional disputes.
Flight operations are increasingly disrupted, with airlines such as Air India, FlyDubai, Lufthansa Group, and Pakistan International Airlines halting services to Saudi airports. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency highlighted increased risks of misidentification of civil aircraft amidst heightened missile and drone activity.
Houthi threats this week aimed at civilian aviation, warning of consequences for operations in Saudi airspace. Recently damaged aircraft exemplify vulnerabilities, with Saudi authorities cautioning against sharing information related to defense activities.
