Comedian Bill Maher recently targeted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his comments about the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Maher joked on his show, “Real Time,” about the mayor’s response, calling him ‘Tone Deaf.’ The attack, which Mamdani described as “profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers,” has left lasting impacts.
Mamdani condemned the actions of Israel, describing them as “ongoing genocide in Gaza,” which has resulted in over 74,000 Palestinian deaths, including more than 21,000 children. He emphasized that even after ceasefires, violence continues, with over 1,400 Palestinians killed since.
The suffering did not begin nor end that day,
Mamdani stated, urging for a world free from occupation and apartheid. He criticized the U.S. government’s role in what he called “war crimes” through arms shipments.
Maher critiqued these statements, interpreting them as shifting blame to Israel. He also mocked Mamdani’s earlier rap career, where he performed under the names “Young Cardamom” and “Mr. Cardamom,” quipping that his rap name should be ‘Tone Deaf.’
Mamdani’s dining at a Palestinian restaurant also drew attention. A related establishment had faced past criticisms for its menu language described as antisemitic, displaying “Down with the occupation” in multiple languages.
Political strategist Kaivan Shroff argued that Maher’s criticism might politically benefit Mamdani. Shroff suggested that Mamdani’s statement was strategic, designed to engage his base by addressing key concerns and potentially criticizing figures like Netanyahu. This controversy might help solidify Mamdani’s support with his base, despite the backlash.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s administration for a comment but did not receive an immediate response.
