The Texas Longhorns, ranked at the top, had multiple chances to claim their third consecutive victory in the Red River Rivalry. However, they stumbled on their grand stage. In the end, the unranked Oklahoma Sooners took their opportunity and seized a 27-24 victory in Dallas, exploiting a missed field goal in the closing minutes and two key interceptions in the fourth quarter by Arch Manning.
The game commenced with Texas appearing dominant. Arch Manning showcased his skills by making a notable play, scrambling left and delivering a 41-yard touchdown pass. Despite this, Oklahoma responded in the subsequent quarter. Texas managed to enter halftime with a 17-7 lead.
After the half, Oklahoma found momentum while the Longhorns’ offense faltered. The Sooners secured a third-quarter field goal amidst a series of punts. As the fourth quarter began, Oklahoma tied the game with a touchdown from Lloyd Avant, overcoming their earlier deficit.
The dynamic shifted when Manning threw an interception to Peyton Bowen, who converted it into a 42-yard pick-six. This gave Oklahoma a 24-17 lead with just over ten minutes remaining. Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Dakoda Fields celebrated recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown earlier in the game.
Texas, faced with adversity, did not give up. Manning threw to Cam Coleman for a 342-yard momentum-shifting pass. Soon after, he connected with Jermaine Bishop Jr., leveling the score with over six minutes left. Texas forced an Oklahoma punt, seizing an opportunity to control the game.
The Longhorns made rapid progress down the field but had to attempt a 52-yard field goal, which missed wide-right. Oklahoma took possession with under two minutes remaining. Despite Texas forcing a punt, Manning’s subsequent interception ended their hopes. Oklahoma moved into field-goal range after two back-to-back passes, and Tate Sandell successfully made a 47-yard field goal as time expired.
This marked Texas’s initial loss of the season, causing them to lose their first-place SEC ranking, with Alabama and Georgia both standing unbeaten at 5-0. The victory improved the Sooners’ record to 3-2, keeping them in contention for a playoff spot.
