Federal agents conducted a search of the Washington, D.C. residence of Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, on Monday morning. According to the Department of Justice, Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant that was approved as part of an ongoing federal investigation. Details about the investigation have not been disclosed by federal authorities.
Representative Omar expressed her disapproval of the search on social media, describing it as an attempt to target political adversaries and misuse federal law enforcement. In her post, Omar declared, “I will not be silenced.” Several Homeland Security Investigations agents were seen around Omar’s home during the search.
Jackie Rogers, a spokesperson for Omar, labeled the operation a “raid” and criticized it as an “outrageous abuse of power” and an “unprecedented escalation” in using federal law enforcement against political opponents. The search occurred early in the morning, waking up Sharon Jackson, a neighbor who lives nearby. Jackson recounted being awoken by loud noises, seeing federal agents outside her window with a large truck.
The timing of the search is notable as it predated the upcoming midterm elections, where Omar is campaigning for reelection. In previous discussions, Vice President Vance accused Omar of committing immigration fraud, charges she denies.
